Boing Boing Gadgets: Dying for 3G? 6 cell-tower technicians fall to death in 5 weeks

"A rise in cell-tower deaths is being attributed to the breakneck rollout of 3G cellular services, which require equipment on the tall installations to be upgraded. Fortune's Apple blog tallies five deaths in only 12 days, following months of accident-free operation."

Hmmm, my new phone uses 3G...

Expanding Horizons

And now, the list of movies and TV shows I never would have normally seen if it were not for Mike Nelson's RiffTrax (not counting tracks that are not out yet and short films):

  • Plan 9 From Outer Space
  • Night of the Living Dead
  • Road House
  • Cocktail
  • XXX
  • Crossroads (Yes, Britney Spears' movie.)
  • Top Gun
  • Point Break
  • Halloween (The original, and one of the slowest movies I've ever seen.)
  • The Grudge
  • The Island of Dr. Moreau
  • Firewall (Full disclosure: I saw this one on a train first.)
  • Nestor the Long Eared Donkey
  • Reign of Fire
  • Battlefield Earth (I rented this movie long before RiffTrax started just to see how bad it was with my own two eyes. So I had to get it again to get my revenge.)
  • Troll 2
  • Over the Top
  • The Wicker Man (Nicholas Cage's remake.)
  • Lost
  • Eragon
  • Glitter
  • Predator
  • Grey's Anatomy
  • Fantastic Four
  • The Bourne Identity
  • Next
  • Missile to the Moon
  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
  • Reefer Madness
  • Star Wars Holiday Special
  • Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
  • Beowulf
  • Cloverfield
  • I Am Legend
  • Star Trek: Phase II
  • Dark Water
  • Saw

Now that's a lot of mostly crap.

I could actually use this.

Action Must Be Taken

I've made up my mind on this. Because Telus won't let me get the phone I want without paying full retail price and upgrade from a pre-paid plan to a monthly one, I'm leaving and taking my number with me.

Further bulletins as events warrant.

Movie: Speed Racer: The IMAX Experience
Theatre: Famous Players Paramount Chinook
Food Snuck In: none

I went to see Speed Racer today, and had a fun time. If you thought the visuals on the trailers and the ads were trippy, wait until you see them fill your entire field of vision on a five-story IMAX screen.

Watching Speed Racer It was clear to me that the Wachowski Bros. wanted to create a kick-ass family film and I think they succeeded. Knowing what they're capable of, they really held themselves back to get a PG rating.

So go see it if you want to turn off your brain for two hours, and in IMAX if you can. And bring the kids.

And now, the quote of the film:

Trixie: Oh my god, was that a ninja?
Pops Racer: More like a "non"-ja. Terrible what passes for a ninja these days.

Microsoft Confession, Part 3

I've written earlier about my quasi-obsession with the Zune. And I think I finally figured out why I want one, indirectly thanks to The Man, Stephen Colbert.

On May 6th's Colbert Report, during "The Word" Colbert suggested that for John McCain's campaign, President Bush should pull a Reverend Wright and start doing crazy things. And one of those things was to buy a Zune. (Click here for the video, and advance to the 4:00 mark to see the whole piece.)

And that made something click in my mind. I want a Zune so I can be different. Every day when I'm on the bus I see people with white iPod earbuds on and I blend into the crowd. Now don't get me wrong, the iPod is a marvellous piece of technology, but I'm starting to want something else! I want to be unique! Microsoft said so itself in this CP report:

""Right now there is really only one dominant player, and with Zune coming to the market now, in June, it just offers people with another credible alternative where they can say 'I actually get to decide which one is right for me,' " said Elana Zur, Microsoft Canada's Zune product manager."

Or maybe this is just all because the Zune is next. Guess I'll wait and see until June.

CBC News: Death on Via train, illnesses not infectious, say officials

"Ontario's chief medical officer says it's unlikely a woman who died on board a Via Rail train had an infectious disease, and says other passengers are not at risk."

I wasn't thinking of taking another train trip this year anyway.

As I've written before, I'm thinking about getting a Zune. And now that the Canadian launch date has been confirmed: June 13, that red Zune 80 is looking kinda nice.

My profile is up and running and my Zune Card has been created, waiting for me to start sharing with the world the music I listen to.

Somebody please help me.

I got your swap right here.

It goes without saying that I collect video games. However, some of the stuff I have collected have fallen into the "Temporary Infatuation" category. When I now look back on this stuff I say "What was I thinking at the time?"

I was considering putting some of the stuff I want to get rid of on eBay, but I just found a site specifically for game trading: Goozex.

Here's how it works: you make a list of the games you want to trade for, and the games you want to trade with. The site automatically matches you up with a "buyer" and if you approve the trade you send the game out and earn points on the site. Once you've gotten a certain number of points, a game you want is matched with a "seller" and they sent you it in the mail. And the only costs to you are one dollar for each game received, plus whatever Canada Post gouges you for to send stuff out.

In the few hours that I've been a member, I've already got two buyers in Ontario and Maryland for stuff I wanted to get rid of. However, I've noticed two problems:

  1. No games for vintage systems like NES or Super NES.
  2. Downloadable titles from Xbox Live Arcade and Wii Virtual Console are listed. How can I send you those when all I have are zeros and ones?

But I think this site is a neat idea and I'll be sure to keep my lists going.

Movie: Iron Man
Theatre: Famous Players Paramount Chinook
Food Snuck In: Peanut Butter M&Ms

I went to see Iron Man today, and had a great time. Robert Downey Jr. nailed the character of Tony Stark perfectly. Lots of action, great effects, great characters, go see it.

However, stick around for the closing credits to end as there's a surprise afterwards. I won't say any details, but it is the most blatant setup for a sequel I've ever seen. However, what it hints at and who they got for a cameo appearance made the Marvel Latter-Day Ultimist True Believer in me go "SQUEEE!!!"

I! Love!! Springtime!!!
